Starting Over After A Divorce - 6 Strategies For Moving Forward Into a New Life

Divorce is often a painful and challenging life transition that involves a vast amount of change in a short period of time. Living arrangements, intimacy with your ex partner, finances, and access to children all generally undergo big changes. It is important to understand what happened in the relationship, including your part in the failure of the marriage, to fully heal and begin to move forward in a healthy direction. Here are 6 strategies for moving forward into your new life following a divorce:

1. Honor your emotions. You have been through a significant loss; it has been compared in terms of grief to the pain of losing someone through death. Take some time to work through the hurt, anger and disappointment. Journal your feelings and allow yourself plenty of adjustment time.

2. Take good care of your body. Eat well, avoiding junk foods and sugars. Take supplements and vitamins if needed - a food based multivitamin and fish oil are a good start. Your health care practitioner may be able to offer additional suggestions based on your overall health history and specific needs. Exercise regularly and get plenty of rest. The more you can support your physical health, the better benefit it will have for you emotionally.

3. Get connected to your support network. This can be friends, family, or even support professionals like a counselor or coach. Avoid isolation and spend lots of time around people who will affirm your worth and see your value.

4. See a counselor if you feel overwhelmed by your emotions. A good counselor can assist you with your perspective, and offer trained feedback to help you heal your past wounds.

5. Combat negative thoughts if they become persistent. Imagine a red "X" through the thought and say the word "Stop" out loud to arrest the image. Then immediately start another activity or otherwise occupy your mind to get out of the negative thought cycle.

6. Start daydreaming about your future, the possibilities for career, lifestyle, and family. What makes your heart sing? Visualize these things in full detail, including their smell, taste, feel, visual, and sound. The more you focus on these positive things, the more likely they are to manifest in your life.
